Blog: MySpace set sights on games industry

News Corp digital head Jonathan Miller said last Thursday he wants to expand the video game platform on his company’s sagging social networking site, which lags way behind Facebook in number of users.

It’s a little surprising that to date no social network has tapped into the vibrancy of gaming’s communities in any meaningful way. Music to date has been the key entertainment sector that MySpace and Bebo have focused on whilst gaming has very much taken a back seat. It’s another example of mainstream media brands coming rather late to the party when it comes to truly partnering with the games industry.

News Corp have long been making ambitious statements about opportunities in games. We’re looking forward to seeing how this develops – as News Corp has a real opportunity to leverage it’s print titles, the Fox network and movie divisions. Perhaps some acquisitions may also be on the way.

One thing is for sure – the social network that can effectively interact and provide a compelling offer for the gamer community will be on to a winner and one which could fundamentally impact the way games are marketed.
