Pernel commission for ‘20 Years on Death Row’
Independent TV Production Company Pernel Media and Boom! client today announces a commission from French Pay TV channel 13éme Rue to produce a major new English language true crime series ’20 Years on Death Row’.
Shot entirely on location in the US, ’20 Years on Death Row’ (4 x 60’) features the incredible case of Keith Doolin, a former long distance truck driver with no previous criminal convictions, currently incarcerated on death row in San Quentin prison around 20 miles north of San Francisco. He was convicted of the murder of two women in 1995 and after 20 years maintaining his innocence while awaiting execution he is still in limbo, going through California’s capital appeals system.
On November 8th, voters in California elected to speed up the death penalty process. This new development has created uncertainty as well as an increased sense of urgency for Mr. Doolin and his defense team to prove his innocence.
Mr. Doolin’s conviction is noteworthy for the many injustices at his trial, including gross misconduct by the prosecution’s office as well inept representation by his trial lawyer. The attorney, who was later disbarred and has now passed away, presented a deeply flawed defense of Mr. Doolin.
The case is also remarkable because of new evidence indicating that a prosecution witness – who herself was later convicted of two brutal murders and who has since committed suicide – revealed crucial information to her lawyer which may free Mr. Doolin of his death penalty conviction and sentence. Whether that lawyer cannot reveal his deceased’s client’s secrets is presently being litigated.
’20 Years on Death Row’ was commissioned by 13ème RUE’s Head of Productions & Acquisitions Hector Lavigneand Stephanie Hunt VP, Programming, Southern European Channels. Executive Producer is Samuel Kissous for Pernel Media. It follows the success of Pernel Media’s 4 x 60’ series ‘The Innocence Network’ which also aired on 13ème RUE and is distributed internationally by all3media International.
“The Keith Doolin case is an extraordinary story where the new evidence that has recently come to light could save his life. We’re delighted to partner again with 13éme Rue in making another gripping true crime series which will follow Keith’s appeal process, revealing the new evidence and twists and turns of the case” said Samuel Kissous, President of Pernel Media.
Pernel Media secured access to the case via Mr. Doolin’s defense attorneys, Robert R. Bryan and Pamala Sayasane, both of whom specialize in death penalty litigation.
